What do I do about my kid's dry skin?

It's wintertime and that means dry skin here. It's a common problem and one the I get asked about a lot.

Here are some suggestions.

1. Avoid overbathing. Overbathing can dry out the skin. Every other day is fine or even a few times a week. Babies don't get very dirty.
2. Lotion, lotion, lotion. The ones that work best are the thicker ones. It doesn't really matter what it is as long as it's thick. Eucerin and Cetaphil are good choices.

  1. In addition to moisturizer I, a Canadian Primary Health Care NP, also recommend using a fragrance-free mild cleanser (such as Cetaphil). Many of the commonly used baby washes are filled with fragrances and ingredients to create lather/bubbles that can be very irritating to the skin.
