How do I know if I need stitches?

Here's some general guidelines to help you decide.

If your cut won't stop bleeding it needs to at least be looked at by a medical professional. This should be after applying firm consistent pressure to the area for 10-15 minutes.
If there are bones or tendons visable then it needs stitches.
If it is gaping open and you can't get it to close nicely with a bandaid it needs stitches.
In general, wounds on the face are more frequently closed with stitches because the scar will look better.

Most of the time we will not suture if it had been longer than 6-8 hours after the injury.

There are times when we will close wounds for cosmetic reasons when they would have healed anyway. Most wounds that have stopped bleeding would be fine if they weren't sutured but the scar is usually better if it is sutured.
