Albuterol is not a daily medication!!

I work in an urban setting with a largely hispanic population. I see a lot of kids who have asthma diagnoses and their parents tell me that they use their albuterol every 4 hours all the time.

If you are using your albuterol every 4 hours all the time then your asthma is not under control. Albuterol is meant to be used as a rescue medication.

This site shows a guideline for stepwise treatment of asthma.
http://www.pulmonologychannel.com/asthma/five-step-treatment.shtml

The magic number is 2 times per week.. if you are using your albuterol more than 2 times per week then you need daily controller medications such as flovent or pulmicort. If you are on daily medications and still need albuterol 2 times per week then you need to step up to a higher dose or another medication may need to be added. You can step up or step down your treatment as needed.

If you are using your albuterol 6 times per day every day then your asthma is not under control and you need further medication. Please followup with your pediatrician if you are still having problems.
