Fall- time for upper respiratory infections

We are seeing a lot of upper respiratory infections in the ED these days. Flu hasn't quite shown up yet but it's coming..

Things to know:
1. Get your flu shot! Trust me, it does not cause the flu. The flu may seem like a minor illness in theory but once you get the flu you will wish you got the shot. The flu can lead to secondary pneumonia and can be serious. I have seen some pretty sick kids who had pneumonia. Even if you don't get pneumonia, the flu can make you totally miserable.
2. Encourage good handwashing with your kids. We started seeing a lot more colds once school started. Handwashing is the number one way to prevent the spread of infection!
3. Kids who have minor runny noses and coughs can go to school. Kids who have fevers, lots of drainage and are really sick need to stay home. Please think of the other kids in your child's class.
